Medical Jokes for You

Friday, May 9th, 2008

A man who had died suddenly in his sleep awakened to find himself in heaven. Being disoriented but curious, he began to walk around taking in the wondrous sights. he marveled at the pearly gates, as well as the streets paved with gold. After a while he felt hungry and asked one of the other occupants where he might find something to eat and was directed to the cafeteria. When he arrived he found a line a mile long and took his place at the end.

The line was progressing very slowly when a limo pulled up in front and discharged a man with a great beard and carrying two stone tablets who went in ahead of everyone else. The fellow became angry and tapped the person in front of him on the shoulder and asked who is that? The person in front of him replied that it was Moses the bringer of law. This satisfied the fellow for the present.

A short while later another limo pulled up and discharged a fellow wearing robes and carrying a staff who also went in ahead of the rest. The fellow again was irritated and asked the person in front of him who that arrival was, and was told that it was St. Jerome a patriarch and very important! This also satisfied the fellow for a short time.

After a time a sports car pulled up in front and a man carrying a black bag went in ahead of the rest, which infuriated the poor fellow who asked in exasperation, just who the hell is that? This time the line answered in unison, “Oh, that’s God, but he thinks he is a doctor!”

Navtej Kohli talks about feeding birds

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Welcome back! I’m back again with one more interesting post on Navtej Kohli Blog.

Ornithology has come a long way from forests to our backyards. Observing birds and their amusing antics is my favorite pastime. As a kid, I had fun tossing out bread crumbs and some cracked corn onto the snow covered ground. I had one simple feeder which was good enough. However, today we have a plethora of feeders and gadgets to choose from and we are creating backyard habitats. Bird feeders are a great way of drawing various species of birds to your little yard.

I vaguely recall from my childhood, I was grinding Indian corn with my mom’s hand crank meat grinder. I placed the cracked corn on a crude platform feeder I had made from a piece of plywood and some old floor molding. Feeding birds seemed to be a winter-only thing. Now I care for birds year round. I have several feeders, squirrel baffles, water sources and my own little backyard habitat.

Except to feeders, food itself has evolved. The premium food has turned wild birds into backyard pets. Avid birders are on a constant look out for new ways to attract wild birds.

Out of my own experience and what I have learned from my ornithologist friends, there are four basics of attracting birds to your yard.

1. Food sources: It can be as simple as a feeder or two. Black oil sunflower seed will attract the greatest variety of desirable birds to your yard. Feed can be custom blended to help attract certain species of birds in your area. Plant native flowers, shrubs and trees that offer seed, nuts, berries nectar.

2. Feeders are now designed for specific birds and to keep squirrels and larger birds at bay. There are finch feeders, woodpecker feeders, nectar feeders and suet feeders. Feeders can be tubes, platforms or hoppers.

3. Fresh water: It will attract some birds quicker than what feeder might. A birdbath, old pie pan or saucer to a flower pot will work.

4. Protection: this is a must, if you want birds to feed and bathe in your yard. Birds need to feel safe from predators. It is important to place food and water in the open, yet close to trees and shrubs for that quick get away when needed.

5. Nesting sites: it can be a simple nest box properly located, to several trees and shrubs birds find to their liking.

Navtej kohli talks about benefits of Aerobics

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

In response to one of the comments, today, on Navtej Kohli blog I’m stating the benefits of aerobic exercise.

Though, I don’t know much about aerobics but I found one good article on the same.

Below is an excerpt…

Aerobics is highly beneficial. While doing aerobics your body produces more energy and delivers more oxygen to your muscles. Your heart beats faster and increases the blood flow to your muscles and then back to your lungs.
Aerobic means “with oxygen” and your body’s aerobic system is your heart, lungs, blood vessels and muscles. The benefit of aerobic exercise is based on how well your body can deliver oxygen to your muscles and use it for energy. Regular aerobic workouts increase your ability to take in and transport that oxygen and improve your aerobic capacity.
A good aerobic exercise program can help you live a longer, healthier life and enhance your well being. You get a multitude of benefits if you do your aerobic workout on a regular basis even if the intensity is low or short in duration. It’s fun to keep a log of your workouts that track your progress to see how far you have come in your pursuit of fitness.
The bottom line is to start an aerobic workout that you enjoy and look forward to doing on a consistent basis. Aerobic activity is fun and it doesn’t require a lot of concentration. So listen to music, watch TV or listen to educational tapes while you are performing your aerobic exercise program.
Aerobic workouts make you feel better about yourself so you can enjoy life more. It boosts your mood, strengthens your heart muscle, helps you maintain your weight and can even lower your blood sugar levels. It can help increase your stamina and help you manage stress. A session of aerobic activity can help you relax after a stressful day at work. It can even improve your sexual performance.
If you maintain a regular aerobic exercise program as you get older, your muscles will stay stronger and help you avoid fractures and falls. This will help keep you independent and on your own longer. People who engage in exercise and cardiovascular fitness appear to live longer than those who don’t.
Aerobic activity comes in many forms and you can benefit from the time you spend in doing them. The benefits of aerobic exercise are good for your body and your mind and will help to make you live longer, stay healthier and feel great.

Your dog is no more!

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Being a part of Medical Industry Navtej Kohli knows that laughter is the best medicine. Now even a cat scan and lab test on your dog can cost a fortune. See how this lady got a hole drilled in her pocket ;)

A woman told the vet that something was wrong with her dog. He examined the animal and told her the dog was dead.

“I don’t believe you”, she said, “I’d like a second opinion”

The vet said that would be fine. He went into the other room and got a cat. He put the cat up on the table with the dog. The cat sniffed the dog and jumped down. The vet then got a black lab, put him on the table and the lab sniffed and jumped down.

The vet tells the lady again, “I’m sorry, but your dog is definitely dead. That will be $600 for the exam.

“$600 is ridiculous, what are the charges for?” she exclaimed.

“$600 is a bargain,” the vet explained. “$50 for me and only $550 for the cat scan and lab work.”

Mother’s Day

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Mother’s day is on its way and if you still haven’t selected any gift for your mom then here are some ideas.

There are many ways to categorize gifts by price, type, personality, habbits. But whatever you select my personal opinion is that instead of buying something expensive you should make something from your own hands and gift it to her.

It will show a personal touch and will be more touching. So in the hobbies section here would a new hobby for you to work on this week. Some hand made ideas are:

Yummy treats, write a song, embriodery, greeting card, handmade home decoration items, etc. The list is never ending so use your imagination and get going.

Benefits of yoga by Navtej Kohli.

Being a doctor myself I cannot afford to overlook the benefits of yoga for a healthy mind and body. Yoga has graduated from merely a hobby to a way of life for many.  People from all walks of life are practicing and enjoying yoga equally.

I must thank yoga if ever do I get a chance. It has helped me much more than just being physically fit. What keeps me motivated to stick to yoga and continue practicing is its calming influence on my mind and soul. Once you will start practicing yoga you will notice instant changes in yourself.

Many studies too supported psychological benefits of yoga, which are ultimately related to physical benefits. Some of the most profound benefits of yoga are stress management, improving stamina, confronting anxiety, expanding consciousness and augmenting immunity.

Last week at work was really stressful for me. But thanks to yoga that rejuvenated my mind body and spirit. We all know that mind and body goes hand in hand. Studies have shown that people who practice yoga share a better optimism, better awareness and alertness and even appreciation for one’s surroundings.

Yoga is a form of exercise and it’s this form of activity provides great benefits psychologically. It simultaneously works on your inner and outer beauty.
Even the spiritual benefits of yoga are immeasurable. It helps you to focus and, thereby turn away your mind from disturbing thoughts. Yoga is a great way to achieve that so called unexplored higher level of consciousness.

With such enormous benefits, I just can’t resist practicing yoga. For me it has become a norm now. So you too don’t miss your chance at a healthy life. Find yourself a yoga school today!

Navtej Kohli’s most favorite books

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Navtej Kohli shares some books of his choice that can magically change your life:

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
One of the best reads on those chilly winter evenings. Although I read it a couple of years back, but it clicks my mind even today. It is told as the fable of a young shepard boy who goes on a quest to find a worldly treasure. From his home in Spain, he journeys around the world and learns the values of hard work, and following his dreams.

The Celestine Prophecy, An Adventure by James Redfield
Well if any one of you has read this book, I’m sure you would agree that it is an amazing book. This book revolves around the concept of synchronicity. At times it is little predictable. But if you haven’t read it yet, you should probably get one.

The Greatest Miracle In The World by Og Mandino
It is certainly my all time favorite. Og Mandino is a polished writer and wht’s special about his books is that they are all engaging. This book is really interesting and keeps you guessing till end.

Illusions, Tales of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach
I read this book long ago, when I was in school. It really has lot to teach.

The Way of The Wizard by Deepak Chopra
This book is a true guide.
